Life is the art of drawing without an eraser ~ John W. Gardner

Watch. Me. Daniel Wellington

I am not so much of a jewellery person. I’m just plain lazy to wear them. There is only one thing that I will feel uncomfortable if I don’t wear it when I go out (other than clothes). A watch.

I love watches. However, I don’t have many watches. I am pretty loyal to my watches. :P

I used to have one watch for casual, and one for work. That’s it. I only change my watch when it really reaches the end of its life. However, watches don’t go spoil or rot. I usually buy new watch when the old one is beyond repair, or I couldn’t find a compatible replacement strap when the original one is torn. That means, I only buy new watch every 5 or 6 years. LOL! If everyone were like me, the shops will be out of business very soon. :P

Recently, things changed a little. :D

Few months ago, I saw this Daniel Wellington watch on Fancy. The simplicity of the design caught my eyes. I went Google for it, read about it, looked up more of its photos…… I fell in love with it. You can go to their website if you want to know about their history.

I’ve read reviews that it is not worth the price since it is running on a Japanese quartz movement, and people always said with that kind of price, you could get a better one (I’ve even read people making fun of the backwards “D” on the watch :P). I was struggling for a while. What they said is true, with that kind of price, and if I just top up a little, I could get a much better watch. However, the beauty of the DW watch has kind of won me over. The more I looked at it, the more I wanted it. I was resisting the urge to buy it…… Until last month. I don’t care whether it’s Japanese quartz or not, I just love it and I want it.

Wanted to get a Valentine’s gift for Andrew, I decided it was a great excuse for me to buy it then. Hahaha. The price of the watch on Fancy, is the same with the price on Daniel Wellington’s website. I saw on DW’s website that you can enter “discount code” at check-out. Out of the blue, something struck me. I went Google for “Daniel Wellington discount voucher”. When I saw those discount codes, I nearly screamed “YOU’RE SUCH A GENIUS ASHLEY!” LOL! It was near Valentine’s day, so there was this Valentine’s day discount code for 20% off all items! And guess what, DW was doing free shipping worldwide! I bought 2 watches immediately without much ado. Lucky I decided to buy it through DW website instead of Fancy.

It is actually cheaper for us (Malaysia) to buy from DW website as the price will be reduced due to the VAT since we’re not the European country. However, I did pay for the import duty tax when I received the watches, RM18.36. I was so happy when I got the watches, within 4 days after I placed my order! Hats off to UPS. Here’s  the watches all the way from Sweden.

Classic Sheffield Lady (silver) and Classic Bristol (rose gold). I’ve also gotten 2 NATO straps. Oh, did I mention that the straps are interchangeable as long as they’re the same size? That is another reason why I love DW watches. DW is so kind and considerate to include the pin so that we can change the straps on our own without having to go to a shop. I’ve not tried changing the straps yet. It’s a pity that the women watch is different size from the men watch. I can’t swap straps with Andrew’s. Hahaha. I got myself a silver face and black leather strap since I already got a rose gold Titus. Got the rose gold for Andrew since he only has silver watches. Indirectly, I made Andrew a DW fan too. LOL! He doesn’t love it as much as I do. To him, it’s a nice watch.

I’m not only impressed with the full leather box, but also the THICK leather straps. The strap is so thick and I think it will take some time to break in. I’ve been wearing it for 2 weeks now, the leather is curved but it still doesn’t “hug” my wrist. Unlike my Titus, it took only a week of wearing to break in and feeling soft. I don’t have to worry that I couldn’t find a matching strap when this one breaks, as long as DW is in the business, I get to order a new one online.

I regretted for not getting the men size for myself after I tried it on. It still looks cool on my wrist ler and I’ve always liked BIG watch. Oh, the diameter of DW women classic is 36mm while for the men it is 40mm. From the photo they don’t look much different but they are when you put them on your wrist. I’m also pretty surprised of how thin it is. I thought it was the illusion since it is bigger. I took my Titus out and compared and I wasn’t convinced. So I compared it with Andrew’s Seiko, wow, DW has a thinner body indeed. And it’s lighter.

Glad that I got the silver face with black leather. It’s so versatile. It still looks “right” even when I’m wearing jeans and t-shirt. My rose gold Titus tends to only go well with formal wear.

Love the simple face design. Some complained that there isn’t at least a date display. To me, that is pure simplicity and DW truly understands the purpose of a watch, to tell the time. If you need to know the date, please go look at the calendar. :P

Now, I have more than 2 watches. My next target is, Panerai. I wonder when will I be able to own a Panerai…… @__@

I’m a happy DW fan. :)

They said hoh, “what kind of watchmaker that can’t even write the D correctly?” LOL!!!!

To think of it hoh, if they were to put the correct D, the width will not be aligned with the W. So the backwards D makes the whole initial looks better. That’s what I think lah.

Hi How, thanks for dropping by. I paid the taxes in cash when they delivered the package to me. I got it within 4 days, but that is not the standard time, please allow them some time to deliver in case you don’t get it within 4 days like I did. Sometimes they have “international free shipping” promo. Do check their website and see what promo they’re having now.

hey ash. wondering whats your wrist size. everyone says the watch would be too big on my hand and suggest i buy the smaller one but im in love with the classics! do you think its too big on you and looks disproportional? Thanks! Also do you know if the tax applies to all amount or if it exceeds certain amount (say 1k myr).

    July 24, 2014 at 8:00 PM

    • Ashley

Hi Ling, my wrist size is about 15cm/6inches. My wrist is more like rounded, not wide. I had the same concerns when I purchased the watch, but turned out it looks just right on my wrist. You can refer to my photo in the blog post above. If you’ve never worn such a big watch before, it’ll take some time to get used to it. The size of the watch is stated on the website, perhaps you can go to a nearest watch store and try on a similar one. I love the watch, and I don’t think it looks disproportion on my wrist. Received some compliments too when I wear it. Oh, one thing to note is, it is thin. Unlike some big watches which can be thick too. So this kind of makes the DW doesn’t look so bulky even when it’s big like the men size.
Regarding the tax, I believe it’s based on types of goods and amount. I never get taxed on clothes but I get taxed on bags and watches.

Hi.. Sorry for disturb.. I’m a watches lover also, and I accidentally saw this blog may I know the process to place the order for this watch? I really like this watch very much and this is the very first time for me to shopping online. I’m not so sure how to place the order. And the last things is the NATO strap is included in the price or?

  8. Eumi

Ermm.. May I know what is the order number under the contact information ? Thanks

    August 21, 2014 at 3:00 AM

    • Ashley

Hi Eumi, thanks for reading. First, you’ll have to signup for an account before you place an order. Then just go to the watch that you would like to order, select the color that you want and quantity, then “add to cart”. Then go to your shopping cart and make payment.

I bought another 2 NATO straps for the watches, the watches that I bought are of leather straps. If you want NATO strap ONLY, just select those watches that are already paired with the NATO straps. You may click on each watch on DW website and read its description.

      Hope the above helps. :)

      Hi Eumi, you’re welcome. :)

What order number do you mean? Have you placed your order?

      August 21, 2014 at 12:39 PM

  11. Eumi

😊 haven’t yet. Now just wanna order. In My Account under the address book, the contact information there got an order number need to fill in.

    August 21, 2014 at 12:51 PM

    • Ashley

No, no. After you log in, you have to go select the watch you want, then add it to cart then proceed to check out and payment. You will only get the order number after you make the payment. Under your account, you fill in all the information about yourself. You don’t have to fill in the order number as it is only generated after you place your order.

Yes, you will also receive an email after you order. And you will receive another notification email when they deliver the watch.

    August 21, 2014 at 12:56 PM

  13. Hey! Are the ones in the photo where you wore them the women size or men’s? I searched for images of the women’s size and some looks too small on the wrist while some looks just right (almost the entire wrist). Please reply! Thank you :)

    August 21, 2014 at 11:47 PM

    • Ashley

I bought two watches. The rose gold with brown leather straps is men size, the watch face covers my entire wrist. The silver with black straps is women size, it is slightly smaller than men size. You can check the description of each of the watch on the website, the size is all stated. Women size has two types though, “Classy” is smaller than “Classic”. “Classy” is more like the usual women size watch you can get from watch shop. I suggest you study the sizes specify on the website and choose the one that best fits you. :)

the watches look gorg on u ash! :) I was planning to buy a dw watch n I found ur review vry useful while surveying for the feedback :D btw may I knw was it UPS or Pos M’sia deliver it to ur doorstep? How do they calculate the tax?

    November 5, 2014 at 4:10 PM

    • Ashley

      Hi Bren, thank you! :)
Some time ago I saw Groupon had a deal on DW watches. And recently I also saw some people selling them online. However, be careful of the warranty, not sure if these sellers are authorised sellers from DW. If you do not want to go through the hassle of ordering from overseas, buying it online locally is convenient.
UPS delivered it to my doorstep. :) As for the tax, I’m not sure how they calculate it, my guess is they based on the value and the type of goods. You may call our local custom to ask.
Before you make your order, do check if DW has any offer code now which can give you further discount. :)

Hi Ashley, may i know when you placed your order at DW official website, you select Global – Malaysia? Just worried about the taxes to be pay when the goods delivered to me. Will it cause me a boom?

    December 3, 2014 at 2:06 PM

    • Ashley

Hi Abby, thanks for dropping by. Yes, I select Malaysia. Are you also in Malaysia? You have to select the country where you’ll be receiving the watch. Please refer to my blog post above on the taxes that I had to pay. Please bear in mind that we are responsible to pay for the import duty/taxes, regarding the amount, what I have paid only acts as a guide. If you want to know the exact amount of taxes you will need to pay, please call the local custom office to check on the exact amount of taxes.

      Hope this helps.

    Hi Ashley,

Im Malaysian but due to my work, I ship my DW watches order to Singapore.
But DW did not deduct the 20% VAT to me, how can I declare back? Any idea for this?
I just notice the 20% no deduct from the final amount after I make the payment.
Is so moody for this now, because charge me extra around USD$100++.

Singapore also not is Europe country, so wonder now they will return the money to me or not since I already make payment for it.

can you get back to me on yui_5106@hotmail.com

Hi there, thanks for dropping by. I am not sure how the VAT works in Singapore, probably you can check with the Singapore custom on the VAT? Singapore has a different import duty/taxes from Malaysia, I strongly suggest you to check with Singapore custom.
Please note that I did not pay for the VAT but I did pay for the import duty tax when the item arrived.

      Hope this helps.
